December to February: summer and New Year's on the harbour
It's high season for an obvious reason: long, warm nights, beaches at their best, and the most photographed New Year's Eve on the planet, with fireworks exploding over the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House lit in gold. It's exactly why we designed Oceania's Sydney chapter to open here — but it also means full hotels and high rates if you don't book months ahead.
December in Sydney isn't just good weather — it's the only window of the year to watch the city celebrate New Year's Eve from the inside, not on a screen.
March to May: autumn, the window we prefer
Mild temperatures, clear skies and far fewer tourists — southern autumn is, for us, the best balance of weather and calm. Bondi still delivers perfect beach days, and the Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles is driven without summer's stifling heat.
June to August: mild winter
Sydney rarely dips below 10°C even in the depths of winter, and Melbourne — famous for its "four seasons in one day" — remains perfectly walkable with a good coat. It's low season, so prices drop too, and some of the city's best tables (Gimlet, Tipo 00) are easier to book.
September to November: spring
Gardens bloom, temperatures start rising without reaching full heat, and it's the ideal window if you want to avoid both the New Year's crowds and the winter chill. A good choice if Melbourne and its laneways are your priority over the beach.

If New Year's on Sydney Harbour is a priority, there's no substitute — book at least eight months ahead. If you want the best possible weather without the crowds or high-season rates, March–May is our favorite window for the full Sydney-to-Melbourne itinerary.
